How to Lobby Your Legislator Effectively

"A phone call is a whisper. A personal story is a shout. A coordinated visit is a chorus."

Be Lobby Ready: Video Walkthrough

Watch this short video series before you contact your legislator. It walks through the mechanics of scheduling meetings, making your ask, and following up — neutral, practical, and to the point.

A resource from beyond our school: This video was not created by Paradise Folk School, but we offer it as a helpful companion. Use it alongside our written guide.

Lobbying isn't just for high-paid suits. It's simply telling your elected official what you want them to do. This is a skill every Covenant Member should develop.

1 Prepare before you meet

  • Know the bill number and its title.
  • Boil your "ask" down to one clear sentence: "Vote yes on HB 204 because it funds community land trusts."
  • Connect the ask to the Charter: Refer to Article II (Right to Dignified Life) or III (Eco-Socialism).
  • Prepare a one-page leave-behind fact sheet with your contact info.

2 Schedule the meeting

Call the district office (not the D.C. office) and ask to meet with the legislator or their staff. Be polite, state you're a constituent and a member of the Paradise Folk School. You don't need to explain every detail about the organization; just emphasize that you're a voter in their district.

3 During the meeting

  • Introduce yourselves, thank them for their time.
  • Tell a humanizing story: "In my neighborhood, kids walk past three empty lots to get to school. Our community garden proposal would..."
  • Make the specific ask.
  • Listen to their response. If they're non-committal, ask what information they would need to support the bill.
  • Never threaten; never bribe. We are witnesses, not horse-traders.

4 Follow up

  • Send a thank-you email, restating your ask.
  • Track their position. Share it with our movement.
  • If they vote against the right thing, use prophetic truth-telling Article X—factual, public accountability.

5 Multiply

Get five other members to make the same ask of the same office within a week. Calls and visits from different corners of the district build pressure.
